The Savannah Book Festival, a celebration of the written word, announces today that Ms. Robin Gold has been chosen as the new executive director for the festival effective April 15, 2011. Most recently, Ms. Gold served as a consultant for 2011 Savannah Book Festival, advising in all areas of event planning, communication and development.
Ms. Gold began her non-profit work as the director of special events for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in Connecticut. Moving to Savannah in 2003, Ms. Gold then collaborated with Savannah Country Day School to initiate and direct the Creative Minds Speaker Series. She has also worked as a consultant for the Humane Society for Greater Savannah. Most recently, she collaborated with The Landings Club in 2009 to bring a USTA Professional Men’s Tennis Tournament to Savannah, and she has continued as the tournament chair of the USTA Savannah Challenger.
“After working with Robin on the 2011 festival, I’m thrilled to have her join on a full time basis!” says Stephanie Duttenhaver, board president. “Her experience with Creative Minds is exactly the right background for this job, providing her with the tools to grow the festival as well as expand our creative programming. Her vision and enthusiasm will be immensely helpful to the board as we implement our new strategic plan. Indeed, under the board’s direction, Robin will now lead the effort to recruit author presenters, maintaining the proven quality of previous speakers while striving for an ever better festival.”
Ms. Gold says, “I’m honored and delighted to join such a dynamic organization, which is fast becoming one of our country’s most highly regarded book festivals. The volunteer base is one of the most engaged and enthusiastic groups I’ve ever worked with, and I’m thrilled by this wonderful opportunity.”
Board of directors vice president Jack Romanos, former CEO of publisher Simon & Schuster, adds, “The SBF is in great shape to move forward, and it will continue to deliver the outstanding writing talent that has made this event one of the premier book festivals in the country. We’re fortunate to have Robin joining our team, which includes an outstanding board and a great group of volunteers who help the festival grow and evolve while still holding true to its original mission: to promote reading, writing and civil conversation.”
The Savannah Book Festival’s mission is to promote reading, writing and civil conversation. It is now a significant event in both the literary and southeastern USA calendars, taking place before and during President’s Day weekend. Now in its fifth year, the 2012 Savannah Book Festival will take place on February 17-19, 2012. The Savannah Book Festival Inc. is an independent non-profit corporation led by a volunteer board of directors. It is committed to remaining free and open to the public and to celebrating the written word and its role in improving the human experience.
