(SAVANNAH, GA) Former Vice President, Nobel Peace Prize recipient and bestselling author Al Gore will speak at the 2013 Savannah Book Festival on Saturday, February 16 at 10:15 a.m. at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Telfair Square. The Future, his latest book available January 29, 2013, will be the focus of his 40 minute talk and 20 minute question and answer opportunity: this event will be free and open to the public. In The Future, Gore identifies the six critical drivers of global change with a frank assessment of the emerging forces that are reshaping our world.
The six critical drivers include: (1) economic globalization leading to the emergence of “Earth Inc.” – a new and different relationship to capital, labor, consumer markets and national governments; (2) worldwide digital communications, Internet, and computer revolutions leading to the emergence of “The Global Mind;” (3) a profound shift in the balance of global political, economic and military power; (4) a flawed economic compass leading to unsustainable growth; (5) genomic, biotechnology, neuroscience and life sciences revolutions; and (6) the disruption of the relationship between human beings and the earth’s ecosystems.
The Future publisher, Random House Publishing Group, writes that ours is a time of revolutionary change that has no precedent in history. With the same passion he brought to the challenge of climate change, and with his decades of experience on the front lines of global policy, Al Gore surveys our planet’s beclouded horizon and offers sober, learned and ultimately hopeful forecasts in the visionary tradition of Alvin Toffler’s Future Shock and John Naisbitt’s Megatrends.
From his earliest days in public life, Al Gore has spoken and written of the promise and peril of emergent truths—no matter how “inconvenient” they may be. Savannah’s own Flannery O’Connor, an important voice in American literature, expressed a similar belief with her words, “The truth does not change according to our ability to stomach it.”
Former Vice President Al Gore is co-founder and chairman of both Generation Investment Management and Current TV. He is also a senior partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers and a member of Apple Inc.’s board of directors. Gore spends the majority of his time as chairman of The Climate Reality Project, a nonprofit devoted to solving the climate crisis. Gore was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives four times and the U.S. Senate twice. He served eight years as vice president. He authored the bestsellers Earth in Balance, The Assault on Reason and Our Choice. He is the co-recipient of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize shared, in two equal parts, with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
Al Gore’s event is free and open to the public. It will take place at the Trinity United Methodist Church on Telfair Square. Seating will be limited and no photos or recording are permitted. Gore will sign all purchased copies of the book – with a limit of four per person. Mr Gore will be signing his current book, The Future: Six Drivers of Global Change, to be published by Random House on 1/29/13.
