Looking for Mary is the candid and entertaining sequel to her Donofrio’s memoir, Riding in Cars with Boys. That book about being a teen mom was translated into fifteen languages and made into a popular movie produced by James L. Brooks and directed by Penny Marshall. Her second memoir, Looking for Mary, originated as an NPR documentary and became a cult classic. Looking for Mary has been hailed as “a hymn to mothers” with “an incredibly honest account of one daughter-mother trying to make sense of the roles she has been given, the mistakes she has made, the heartaches she has felt” - The Anniston Star.
Donofrio’s work is collected in a dozen anthologies, and her essays have appeared in such national venues as the New York Times, LA Times, Washington Post, Village Voice, Oprah, Allure, Elle, New Woman, Marie Claire, Spirituality & Health. She has written for network TV and PBS and is a commentator for NPR’s All Things Considered. Donofrio’s first children’s books were published in 2007 and 2008. Mary and the Mouse, the Mouse and Mary, is a picture book illustrated by Barbara McClintock, and Thank You, Lucky Stars is a dancing novel about girlfriends, written for nine to twelve year olds.
Donofrio has been a lay Carmelite living at Nada Hermitage in the Sangre de Cristo mountains of Colorado for nearly four years and has just re-entered the world. Where she will land is still a mystery.
