The trade paperback version was published in November 2009. In April 2010, the book received the Gen. Wallace M. Greene Jr. Award for “the outstanding non-fiction book pertinent to Marine Corps history as judged by the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation.”
“Halsey’s Typhoon: The True Story of a Fighting Admiral, an Epic Storm, and an Untold Rescue” published in January 2007 by the Atlantic Monthly Press. It was a New York Times best-seller. The trade paperback version was published in November 2007 and is in its seventh printing.

Awards include first place in the Best Magazine Article of the Year category five times from the Press Club of Long Island and second place seven times.
I guest-edited the special issue of The North Atlantic Review devoted to John Steinbeck, and I founded the literary magazine Prufrock at the University of Southern California.
Newspapers:
I was a contributing reporter for The New York Times 1984-97. I returned to reporting for The Times in 2003 through 2005. My op-ed column “Farther East” appears every week in the editions of the Press News Group along with regular arts features. The Press received 2008 and 2009 first-place awards from the New York State Press Association for its Op-Ed and Arts sections, and “Farther East” received the Best News Column Award from the Long Island chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists in June 2008. National and regional awards have been received in the Best Deadline News Story, Best Reporting in the Arts, Best Science Reporting, and Best Environmental Reporting categories.
